Bikini Kill is a feminist punk band that was based in Olympia, WA and Washington, DC, forming in 1990 and breaking up in 1997. Kathleen Hanna sang, Tobi Vail played drums, Billy Karren (a.k.a. Billy Boredom) played guitar and Kathi Wilcox played bass. Sometimes they switched instruments. Bikini Kill is credited with instigating the Riot Grrrl movement in the early 90's via their political lyrics, zines and confrontational live show. The band started touring in June 1991. In addition to touring the US several times, they also toured Europe, Australia and Japan. Bikini Kill recorded and released a demo tape, two EP's, two LP's and three singles. Their demo tape was self-released,while their first two records came out as a full length CD/Tape and their singles were posthumously collected on CD. Bikini Kill believed that if all girls started bands the world would change. They actively encouraged women and girls to start bands as a means of cultural resistance. Bikini Kill was inspired by seeing Babes in Toyland play live and attempted to incite female participation and build feminist community via the punk scene. They used touring as a way to create an underground network between girls who played music, put on shows and made fanzines. This independent media making and informal network created a forum for multiple female voices to be heard. Bikini Kill reunited in the Spring of 2019 with original members Kathleen, Kathi, and Tobi who were joined live by Erica Dawn Lyle. They sold out multiple shows in Los Angeles, NYC, and London as well as headlining Riot Fest in Chicago.

Raised in England by Guyanese and Sierra Leonean immigrant parents, Hynes started out as a teenage punk in the UK band Test Icicles before releasing two orchestral acoustic pop records as Lightspeed Champion. In 2011, he released Coastal Grooves, the first so far of five solo albums under the moniker Blood Orange. His 2016 album, Freetown Sound , was released to critical acclaim, and saw Hynes defined as one of the foremost musical voices of his time, receiving comparisons to the likes of Kendrick Lamar and D’Angelo for his own searing and soothing personal document of life as a black man in America. His 2018 album, Negro Swan , was released to equally rapturous response, exploring elements of black depression and identity. His most recent release, the 2019 mixtape Angel's Pulse, described by Hynes as an epilogue to Negro Swan, further explores and builds upon those themes. He has collaborated with Solange Knowles, fka twigs, A$AP Rocky, Puff Daddy, Mariah Carey Janet Mock, and many more, and was recently one of four artists invited to the Kennedy Center to perform alongside Philip Glass. In addition to his production work, he has sold out headlining tours around the world, directed and edited 7 Blood Orange music videos as well as one for Beck's 2019 "Uneventful Days", and composed the scores for the films “Palo Alto,” directed by Gia Coppola, and "Queen & Slim", directed by Melina Matsoukas.

Sound familiar? As in, there is no future in England’s dreaming? Of course, in 2025, bands and artists are less inclined than they once were to sing about issues that affect and bedevil an entire nation. With social media replacing punk rock as the fastest route into the public bloodstream, rock and roll has entered an introspective phase. Just as well, then, that the Pistols’ State of the Union Address remains as pressing, and as prescient, as ever. Inevitably, in the (almost) half century that has elapsed since a pair of Millwall supporting hot dog vendors in Piccadilly Circus unwittingly provided Steve Jones with the title for his group’s sole bona fide album – “never mind the bollocks,” they would say, meaning “don’t bother with that…” – London and Britain have changed almost beyond recognition. But at street level, the problems and frustrations remain the same.
