A pianist and composer best known for his work with Joshua Redman, Paul Cornish sets down in Joe Henderson Lab with his finely minted trio and music from his newest Blue Note release You’re Exaggerating! Hailing from the Houston hotbed of jazz talent, and shaped by the rich musical culture of Los Angeles, Paul Cornish has rapidly emerged as one of the most compelling young pianists in contemporary jazz. Equally grounded in gospel, classical music, hip-hop, and modern improvisation, Cornish developed a distinctive voice that balances technical sophistication with emotional openness. After studying at the prestigious Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance at UCLA and winning the American Jazz Piano Competition in 2018, he went on to perform with major artists including Joshua Redman, Terrace Martin, and Snoh Aalegra, establishing himself as both an imaginative accompanist and a daring bandleader. He brings his working trio and music from his newest Blue Note session, The Myth We Choose , to this SFJAZZ debut. Born in the lush province of KwaZulu-Natal and raised within the spiritual traditions of Zulu culture, Nduduzo Makhathini has become one of the most visionary figures in contemporary jazz. His music fuses the expansive language of American jazz with African spirituality, ritual, and collective memory, creating performances that feel equally like concerts and ceremonies. Deeply influenced by John Coltrane, McCoy Tyner, and South African legends Bheki Mseleku and Abdullah Ibrahim, Makhathini has developed a profoundly personal sound marked by thunderous improvisation, lyrical sensitivity, and emotional depth. An artist whose work stands firmly inside the tradition, Los Angeles-based pianist and composer Brian Simpson gained fame for his decade-long tenure with the legendary George Duke and his 12 releases as a leader that have regularly topped smooth jazz charts since his 1995 debut Closer Still . For this special matinee, co-sponsored by the Smooth Jazz Cruise, Simpson and his finely wrought band will be joined by saxophonist and singer Grace Kelly . The Illinois-born Simpson was born into a musical family and cites the virtuosity of Oscar Peterson as one of his early guiding influences. Moving west after college, Simpson worked with guitarist Norman Brown and saxophonist Everette Harp before touring the world with Janet Jackson and getting the call from the iconic George Duke in 1990. He worked for a decade as music director with smooth jazz stalwart Dave Koz and has released an impressive series of albums including his latest, 2025’s Midnight Groove , featuring appearances by saxophonist Isaiah Collier and trumpeter Keyon Harrold. Called “the future of jazz” by NPR , award-winning saxophonist and vocalist Grace Kelly was recognized in nine consecutive DownBeat Critics Polls having won two “Rising Star” for alto and baritone saxophone. and has released 15 albums including 2024’s Grace Kelly with Strings: At The Movies .

Saxophonist Branford Marsalis is one of the most influential and revered figures in contemporary music. The NEA Jazz master, three-time Grammy Award winner, and Tony and EMMY Award nominee is equally at home performing concertos with symphony orchestras and sitting in with members of the Grateful Dead, but the core of his musical universe remains the Branford Marsalis Quartet. After more than three decades of existence with minimal personnel changes, this celebrated ensemble is revered for its uncompromising interpretation of a kaleidoscopic range of both original compositions and jazz and popular classics. The Branford Marsalis Quartet and Dianne Reeves will release a tribute album which revisits Coltrane’s seminal 1963 collaboration with Johnny Hartman. It resisted premade frames and made its own.” — The New York Times “A worthy heir to his father, jazz legend John Coltrane” — The Telegraph “Embracing jazz’s past only as a means to communicate his own modern-day voice.” — Okayplayer Just days before John Coltrane would have turned 100 his oldest surviving son, saxophonist Ravi Coltrane, presents a blazing young band to mark the milestone. While Ravi spent the first quarter century of his career focusing on acquiring a diverse array of experience as a sideman and then honing his own lustrous, harmonically ambiguous compositions, he’s taken up the family mantle in recent years. With a variety of ensembles, projects and initiatives on and off the bandstand, he’s championed the legacy of his parents (including with his 2025 stint as an SFJAZZ Resident Artistic Director). For this celebration he performs with trumpeter Jonathan Finlayson, a longtime collaborator who graduated from Berkeley High and spent years touring and recording with alto sax great and MBASE conceptualist Steve Coleman. A teenage prodigy, Israeli pianist/keyboardist Gadi Lehavi made his Village Vanguard debut with Ravi at 15. Now 30, he’s more than lived up to his enormous potential, playing with consummate technique and capacious imagination. Powering the quartet is Bay Area-reared drum sensation Elé Howell, 28, a supremely musical accompanist who gained national attention when Coltrane started hiring him in 2021 for various projects, including Cosmic Music: Revisiting the Music of John and Alice Coltrane. Though John Coltrane ascended in 1967 at the age of 40, his presence continues to illuminate new directors for exploration.

2011 NEA Jazz Master Branford Marsalis represents “the highest echelon of jazz tenor saxophonists” ( Los Angeles Times ). For this exclusive matinee concert co-sponsored by The Jazz Cruise, the New Orleans-born composer and bandleader returns with his superlative quartet featuring pianist Joey Calderazzo , bassist Eric Revis , and drummer Justin Faulkner to perform a hard-driving mix of standards and his own superlative compositions. As the eldest musical sibling in jazz’s most famous contemporary clan, Marsalis parlayed his formative experiences in Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers and his brother Wynton’s band into simultaneous careers as a performer, educator, composer, label owner, and bandleader with over 30 albums to his name. A three-time GRAMMY winner and 18-time nominee, Marsalis’ insatiable desire to expand horizons has found him performing with the New York Philharmonic, embracing hip hop influences with his Buckshot LaFonque project, leading the house band on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno , working in the pop realm with Sting and Bruce Hornsby, and composing the score to the Oscar-winning 2020 film Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom . Formed in 1988, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra has been the standard bearer of the large group format for over 35 years. The 14-piece assemblage of virtuosos has contemporized the notion of a "big band” by simultaneously honoring the rich heritage of Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong while debuting a stunning variety of commissions from jazz’s greatest names including Joe Henderson, Christian McBride, Freddie Hubbard, Joe Lovano, and Wynton Marsalis. Assembled as an outgrowth of the Lincoln Center’s Classical Jazz series, the orchestra was originally directed by composer, arranger, and Duke Ellington scholar David Berger before Wynton Marsalis became Artistic Director in 1991, issuing their debut release Portraits by Ellington the following year. Since then, the orchestra has constantly toured the world as cultural ambassadors for the music and released no less than 45 albums including Wynton Marsalis’s 1997 jazz oratorio Blood on the Fields , winning the first Pulitzer Prize for Music ever awarded to a jazz ensemble. Featuring a stellar lineup including saxophonist Sherman Irby , trumpeters Ryan Kisor and Marcus Printup, and former SFJAZZ Collective drummer Obed Calvaire , the band performs a selection of timeless compositions highlighting the power of swing. A 2011 NEA Jazz Master and arguably the most famous jazz musician alive, trumpeter Wynton Marsalis is an iconic figure in the evolution of the art form and a tireless advocate for jazz as America’s classical music. On this bittersweet occasion, he returns for his final Bay Area appearances with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra before he steps down after the 2026-27 Season. From his New Orleans beginnings and fiery debut with legendary drummer Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers to his string of acclaimed albums, Marsalis has amassed an unrivaled number of awards and accolades, including nine GRAMMYs and the Pulitzer Prize for Music, the first ever awarded to a jazz artist. He was instrumental to Miles Davis’s resurgence in the 1980s and helps us celebrate Miles’s centennial with music from Davis’s landmark 1982 live double album We Want Miles , along with classic Miles compositions spanning from the 1950s right up to his final era of Tutu in 1986 and Amandla in 1989 both of which Marcus Miller composed and produced. He will be joined by other members of Miles Davis’s 1980s comeback band guitarist Mike Stern , saxophonist Bill Evans and percussionist Mino Cinelu . A wildly prolific studio musician and bandleader, Miller and his distinctive bass virtuosity have been heard on well over 500 sessions for a dizzying array of major artists including Dizzy Gillespie, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, and McCoy Tyner to Paul Simon, Aretha Franklin, and Luther Vandross. He first appeared with Davis on the trumpeter’s 1980 comeback The Man with the Horn and went on to produce and largely compose Davis’s three late 80s albums Tutu (1986), Music from Siesta (1987), and Amandla (1989). 1982’s double live We Want Miles is a document of Davis’s first live performances after his self-imposed six-year retirement, culled from recordings in Boston, New York, and Tokyo and featuring two versions of the now-classic tracks “Jean-Pierre,” “Back Seat Betty,” and the Gershwin standard “My Man’s Gone Now.”

The Oakland-based band exploring the intersection of Carnatic Indian classical music with jazz and funk return to the Joe Henderson Lab with new music and material from their 2022 self-titled debut album. Made up of percussionist Rohan Krishnamurthy , saxophonist Prasant Radhakrishnan , and keyboardist Colin Hogan , the trio was formed in 2017 to perform at an UnderCover Presents concert in Berkeley honoring the 50th Anniversary of the Beatles’ immortal Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band , and was the perfect outlet for longtime friends Krisnamurthy and Radhakrishnan to meld their love of jazz with their extensive South Indian classical training. A Kalamazoo, Michigan native, Krishnamurthy is one of the leading lights of Carnatic music in the U.S. and a master of the mridangam — a double-headed drum that is the primary rhythm accompaniment in Carnatic music and is played by Krishnamurthy in this project in conjunction with the Western drum set. Phoenix-born Radhakrishnan is known to SFJAZZ audiences through his dynamic Indo-Jazz trio VidyA and has been a major force in Bay Area jazz since 2005. Hogan is a San Francisco native who came through the prestigious Berkeley High jazz program and works with Tommy Igoe, Jazz Mafia, and his brothers in the Hogan Brothers band.

Winner of the Sarah Vaughan International Vocal Competition, Cyrille Aimée truly has jazz in her blood. Raised by a French father and Dominican mother in the northern French town of Samois-sur-Seine – the last home of Roma jazz giant Django Reinhardt – Aimée found inspiration in the music of Reinhardt and the freedom of the gypsy lifestyle, singing on street corners during travels across Europe. Winning the Montreux Jazz Festival Vocal Competition in 2007 helped finance her self-produced debut album, and finishing as a finalist in the 2012 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Vocal Competition elevated Aimée’s visibility to a global level as a major new figure in jazz. A performer possessed of an infectious joy, lightness of touch and deep feeling for the lyric, Aimée released her breakout 2014 hit on Mack Avenue, It’s a Good Day , mixing Roma jazz inspirations, bossa nova, flamenco and the Great American Songbook. A relocation to Costa Rica and new motherhood have instilled a fresh inspiration in Aimée, and for these performances, she performs a cross-section of her wide-ranging repertoire including music from her latest Whirlwind release, à Fleur de Peau and live session, Cyrille Aimée: 4.24 .

If you have any questions, please contact our Box Office at boxoffice@sfjazz.org or 415-788-7353 ABOUT THIS SHOW Virtuoso pianist Hiromi returns to the Miner stage with four exclusive nights with projects ranging from solo to trio. She kicks off her residency with remarkable duo evening with Japanese tap dance master Kazunori Kumagai , revisiting their ongoing collaboration that goes back to their showstopping debut performance at the 2011 Tokyo Jazz Festival. Moving to New York at age 19 to immerse himself in tap culture, Kumagai is a veteran of Ted Levy and Savion Glover’s “Funk University” — the training ground for the landmark musical Bring in da Noise, Bring in da Funk — and studied with the late legend Gregory Hines. After moving back to Japan, Kumagai built on his affinity for jazz with the iconic Japanese trumpeter Terumasa Hino and opened his own studio in Japan in 2008. He was selected as one of the “100 Most Influential Japanese People” by Newsweek Japan and appeared as a solo performer at the Opening Ceremony of the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. He and Hiromi first toured Japan together in 2018. Hiromi’s work in a duo setting has always been a hallmark of her career, in which the limitlessly talented pianist can play off their shared energy, taking both artists to new heights of creativity.

It’s not a fusion band or a jam band. It’s probably best to take Nate Chinen of The New York Times ’ advice, as stated in an online discussion about the group, to “take them for what they are, rather than judge them for what they’re not.” The global collective which features a revolving cast of up to a dozen musicians makes what it likes to call “music for your brain and booty.” Led by bassist and composer Michael League , the band features a rotating lineup of world class instrumentalists whose résumés boast work with stars like Erykah Badu, Marcus Miller, Justin Timberlake, Roy Hargrove, Snoop Dogg and John Mayer. Their 2022 recording, Empire Central , received a well-earned GRAMMY win for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album at the 66th awards ceremony — their fifth win in as many nominations — and was inspired by the band’s formative home of Dallas, blending their whirlwind jazz-ified funk with elements of Southern rock, electric blues, classic soul, slinky R&B, and modern gospel. Winner of the Sarah Vaughan International Vocal Competition, Cyrille Aimée truly has jazz in her blood. Raised by a French father and Dominican mother in the northern French town of Samois-sur-Seine – the last home of Roma jazz giant Django Reinhardt – Aimée found inspiration in the music of Reinhardt and the freedom of the gypsy lifestyle, singing on street corners during travels across Europe. Winning the Montreux Jazz Festival Vocal Competition in 2007 helped finance her self-produced debut album, and finishing as a finalist in the 2012 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Vocal Competition elevated Aimée’s visibility to a global level as a major new figure in jazz. Vocalist, composer, actor, and playwright Somi Kakoma is a sublimely gifted artist possessed of rare power and clarity. A Doris Duke Performing Artist Award winner, TED Senior Fellow, and the first African artist nominated for the GRAMMY for Best Jazz Vocal Album, she is “a virtuosic performer in full command of her instrument and powers” ( The New York Times ). Following her standout performance at the 42nd San Francisco Jazz Festival in 2025, she returns for a night on the Miner Auditorium stage. Born into a Rwandan & Ugandan family, the Illinois-born Kakoma spent her early childhood in Zambia, where she absorbed the music of her adopted home before returning to the States for college studies in anthropology and music — a balance of interests that has come to define her singular vision. Somi was championed and mentored by the iconic South African jazz giant Hugh Masekela and released her 2007 debut Red Soil in My Eyes for Harmonia Mundi’s World Village label — a release that set her on the path to worldwide recognition and globe-spanning tours. 2014’s major label debut The Lagos Music Salon hit #1 on the Billboard jazz chart and featured guest appearances by Common and Angelique Kidjo. "A force to be reckoned with no matter the setting” ( JazzTimes ), Troy Roberts is a powerhouse saxophonist shaping modern jazz — a three-time GRAMMY nominee known widely for his work with Orrin Evans, Veronica Swift, and Kurt Elling, among many others. He’s released five albums as a leader including his latest, 2024’s Green Lights , and his ongoing quintet project Nu-Jive fuses groove, virtuosity, and bold improvisation into a fresh, high-energy sound. For this performance, he is joined by guitarist Tim Jago , pianist Alex Pastrana , electric bassist Eric England and drummer Rodolfo Zuniga . A transplant from Perth, Australia, Roberts emigrated to the U.S. for studies at the University of Miami and established himself in the New York scene, working with organist Joey DeFrancesco, drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts, and pianist Orrin Evans’s Captain Black Big Band. He was a semi-finalist in the 2008 Thelonious Monk International Saxophone Competition and was the recipient of three consecutive DownBeat Jazz Soloist Awards, and has contributed to recordings by Van Morrison, Sammy Figuroa, and Dave Grusin, among others. Influenced by the electro-acoustic fusion tradition, Roberts’s Nu-Jive quintet is possessed of telepathic interplay and superlative musicianship, best experienced as a living, breathing groove machine on stage. To that end, their newest album, 2023’s Nu-Jive: Live at the Perth International Jazz Festival is a fiery homecoming performance for Roberts showcasing the sparkling lineup of guitarist Tim Jago, keyboardist Silvano Monasterios, bassist Eric England, and drummer David Chiverton.

For his night in our series devoted to solo projects by SFJAZZ Collective members, tenor saxophonist and composer David Sánchez brings his Carib ensemble to the stage, presenting the West Coast premiere of his new work, Tambó . Formed to record his 2019 album of the same name, Carib represents a deeply personal journey for Sánchez, and the GRAMMY-nominated debut recording was a trailblazing use of modern jazz to explore the kinship between the West African drum rhythms of Yuba, Calinda, and Sika and traditional music in Haiti, Carriacou, and his native Puerto Rico. Dedicated to the memory of Sánchez’s mentor, the late Nuyorican piano legend Eddie Palmieri, Tambó (drum) was inspired by a recent trip to Haiti and Puerto Rico and the chants and rhythms drawn from the *bomba* tradition he heard in Loíza and San Basilio de Palenque in Colombia. Since his early exposure with Dizzy Gillespie’s United Nations Orchestra, Sánchez has become one of the most celebrated instrumentalists in jazz, recording ten albums as a leader and winning a Latin GRAMMY Award for his 2004 orchestral session, Coral. Over a career full of highlights, he’s performed with a roster of greats including Charlie Haden, Eddie Palmieri, Roy Haynes, Tom Harrell, Roy Hargrove, and Pat Metheny, among others. In addition to Palmieri, Tambó is, in Sánchez’s words, “dedicated to the ancestors who live through us and inspire us with their spiritual strength.”

Singer-songwriter El David Aguilar has become one of the most inventive and emotionally resonant voices in contemporary Latin music, blending folk, bolero, jazz, and rock into songs marked by poetic lyricism and fearless experimentation. Born in Culiacán, Sinaloa, Mexico, Aguilar began writing songs as a teenager and quickly distinguished himself through his literary approach to songwriting and his richly expressive voice. Over the past decade, he has built a devoted international following while earning acclaim for albums that merge traditional Mexican influences with sophisticated modern arrangements. Aguilar has collaborated with celebrated artists including Natalia Lafourcade, Jorge Drexler, and Mon Laferte, establishing himself as a central figure in the new generation of Latin American troubadours. His work has received multiple nominations from the Latin GRAMMY Awards, including five 2018 nominations for his 2017 album Siguiente Segundo including Album of the Year and Song of the Year for Embrujo . Aguilar’s latest album, Compita del Destino , showcases the artist at his most adventurous and intimate. Filled with vivid storytelling, intricate harmonies, and warm acoustic textures, the record explores fate, friendship, love, and personal transformation. The album confirms Aguilar’s reputation as a songwriter capable of turning deeply personal experiences into music of universal emotional power.
