George Carpenter is a Los Angeles-based artist playing performance-driven rock n' roll pooling from a mystic-America water world mythos. The Clog genre-jumps through sinister, innocent, noisy and saccharine sounds, fueled by a reverence for Nico, Scott Walker, Stick Men With Rayguns, and White Zombie. He's been fortunate to play with the likes of Vern Rumsey (Unwound), Flipper with David Yow, V. Vale, Frankie Cosmos, Tonstartssbandht and More. He has performed up and down the western US, Canada, and central Mexico with the Clog and his previous Bay Area-based band, Fish Breath.

Phantom Fruit is a California-based band rooted between Oakland and Fresno. Made up of family and longtime friends, they’ve built a sound that blends dark psychedelic jazz with cinematic atmosphere; music that feels both intimate and expansive. Each track moves with a sense of memory and motion, shaped by years of shared history and creative trust.

Double Helix Peace Treaty draws from the vast well of inspiration in their surroundings to produce a sound that’s wholly their own. From the mystical landscapes of West Marin County to the industrial wastelands at the City’s edge, their music cultivates a sense of place that few bands today accomplish. Here, they belong to a long lineage of California art – the writings of Philip K. Dick, for example, have a strong presence in the band’s lyrics, and their jammy Americana at times gestures towards the Grateful Dead. But the band’s cohesive blend of folk-punk-psychedelia never turns overly nostalgic, always pushing boundaries and experimenting with new forms.

If We Could, Would We is the latest effort from Brooklyn-based duo Gracie and Rachel (Gracie Coates and Rachel Ruggles), who have become known for their innovative brand of elevated indie-pop, complete with baroque string work and piercingly spare song structures. After releasing their self-titled debut to critical acclaim in 2017, Gracie and Rachel have been seen on stages opening for Ani DiFranco, Tori Amos, Julien Baker, Lucy Dacus, and others. They have performed two NPR Tiny Desk Concerts and been praised by the outlet to “mix pop and classical in stark, infectious ways and make unforgettable, surprising music.” Their 2025 single “WTF” earned praise from The Line of Best Fit who raved, “Gracie and Rachel Deliver Folk-Pop for the Future on “WTF,”’” and Rolling Stone which named it a “Song You Need To Know.”

When David Hockney's beautiful lover, Peter Schlesinger, breaks up with him, it leaves David a complete emotional wreck. An artist, he suddenly finds himself unable to create anything, and is awash in depression and loneliness. After a time, David is able to find inspiration in his backyard swimming pool, and he begins a portrait of it. This unique docudrama presents a semi-fictionalized account of the story behind one of Hockney's most popular paintings.

Sandy’s emerged from the ashes of The Botticellis, the critically acclaimed and influential Bay Area band led by singer, songwriter, and composer Alexi Glickman, which released two EPs and one LP before disbanding. In the wake of that breakup, the band’s members scattered into a range of new projects: Glickman produced and drummed for Little Wings, Zack Ehrlich and Ryan Browne joined Sonny Smith to form Sonny and the Sunsets, and Sandy’s began as a casual recording and performing outlet for Glickman, often appearing live as a duo or trio with a revolving cast of Bay Area musicians.

John-Robert has been a notable performer since he was a child, it is simply what he was born to do. At only 13 years old, John-Robert was handpicked to perform on the Ellen show as a musical child prodigy. At 19, he left his hometown Edinburg, VA (pop. 1,070) in 2019 to move to LA and start his music career, bypassing a scholarship to Berklee. He was signed to Nice Life/ Warner by Grammy-nominated producer Ricky Reed (Leon Bridges, Lizzo) and released a handful of singles and EPs over a few years, earning him co-signs from artists Alessia Cara and Camilla Cabello. But it was a live fireside performance of his 2023 song “Come Pick Me Up” that catapulted John-Robert’s lilting blend of traditional folk and Appalachian country into the modern pop landscape. He toured extensively in 2023 and 2024 in the US and abroad supporting artists like Madi Diaz, Rayland Baxter, Leon Bridges and even Liam Gallagher.

Profound is the title of Brattleboro, Vermont, singer-songwriter Ruth Garbus' third studio album for Orindal Records. Listeners of the songwriter's deeper catalog know Garbus' work not only for its minimal melancholy but for vibrant, literate lyrics that take stock of the sludge that fills our psyches and oceans. But on Profound , Garbus is admittedly happier. She is also more self-assured in her music and her place making it. On the opening track, aptly titled, "I Think I'm Ready Now," Garbus sings, "In the pink of your surroundings you can let go of shame / The lemon drops of failure all dissolve / And the sick of sweet pretending just a veil of gauze."

As a final-year medical student, Sophie Payten (aka Gordi) learned to certify death. Beyond just what we see in the movies – checking for a pulse, hearing the monotone of a flatline, announcing the time – the process involves observing a person who's no longer responding. As she looked at their still, waxy skin, Payten says “It made me think of plasticine - that soft, malleable substance, that we can shape and mould in our hands, until we leave it to set in place. I thought about all the ways we are like plasticine in life - how forces we can’t control, contort us into shapes, stretch us thin, and test our resilience. But sometimes, heart-wrenching change can be a thing of beauty.”

more
But the best way to hear Croz Boyce, really, is to forget the backstory for 40 minutes, to discard notions of why this guitar tone or that rhythmic relationship might sound familiar. Instead, simply listen and feel: What do these songs remind you of or make you aspire to? Here are some possible interpretations, all but certainly incorrect in the merged mind of Weitz and Portner but valid nevertheless. Opener “ Hanging Out with a Blueberry Pop ” first feels like lounging on a riverbank with your crew, maybe laughing as you pass a joint around, baking in the sun; the midsection is the splish-splash of finally jumping, too giddy to care about the current. Maybe it’s just the name at work, but “ Towson Acid ” maps the edge of oblivion where even the plainest of facts don’t seem certain, where reality refracts into a dozen different images, where even the drums you hear in the distance are maybe hallucinatory phantoms. And is closer “ Banana Pudding ” only these two homies fucking with each other, the space between the slow strums and the wildly teasing electronics intended to make one another (and, hey, us) chuckle? It works.

Miller is a jazz trumpeter and composer by training – first via Chicago Public Schools, then Oberlin Conservatory. As an instrumentalist he’s played on recordings by Chance The Rapper, Lil Wayne, Mac Miller, and for several years was a regular member of the indie band Whitney. But since 2016 he has been moving more and more in the direction of all around “producer” – working with an expanded palette of synths, pianos, live and programmed drums in addition to his MIDI-augmented trumpet, he has developed a signature cinematic soul-jazz sound rooted in hip-hop structures, heard through his work on tracks for Eryn Allen Kane, Whitney, Knox Fortune, and SZA’s recently-released album SOS (which spent 10 weeks as the #1 spot on the Billboard 200 chart).

The Wildwoods are Noah Gose on vocals, acoustic and electric guitar; his wife, Chloe Gose on vocals and violin; and longtime friend Andrew Vaggalis on vocals and upright bass. Their delicate embrace of the past, present, and future has transformed The Wildwoods into a potent entity. Recently, The Wildwoods were finalists in the 2024 Rocky Mountain Songwriter Contest in Red Lodge, Montana. In 2023, the trio enjoyed being finalists in two high-profile band competitions – FreshGrass Music Festival and VHS “Gems in the Rough.” Also, their songwriting strengths have been recognized by semi-final placements in the International Songwriting competition with tracks such as “Untitled” and “Way of Train.”
