Her warmth and sense of humor fuel every interpretation. After releasing her first CD ‘Body and Soul’ she was asked by the great bassist Ray Brown to be his vocalist on tour. Of course, she accepted, beginning an incredible jazz journey – school was in! Soon after, Azure became the first singer to work with Freddie Hubbard’s band. Additional collaborators include Frank Morgan, Tennyson Stephens, Joe Lovano, Geoffrey Keezer, Curtis Lundy, Dizzy Gillespie and many more. He has performed or recorded with Albert "Tootie" Heath,… more Patrick Wolff is a saxophone and clarinet player with a long history in the jazz scenes of New York City and San Francisco. He has performed or recorded with Albert "Tootie" Heath, Matt Wilson, Grant Stewart, Louis Moholo-Moholo, Dena Derose, and many other jazz greats. Since moving to San Francisco in 2009, Wolff has played and recorded regularly in the bands of Marcus Shelby, Richard Sears, Graham Connah, Adam Shulman, and Diana Gameros. Outside of the jazz world, he has had an eclectic mix of work including long stints in West African pop/funk group Asiko, prog metal band Kayo Dot, and with fuji music legend Adewale Ayuba. With six albums released under his name, Wolff has made his mark as a bandleader with various groups playing his original compositions, and with classic jazz quartets and quintets focused on repertoire of the bebop and hard bop eras. His playing is characterized by a focus on lyricism and an embrace of the whole lineage of jazz styles.Wolff is also a passionate jazz educator and advocate. For four years, he hosted and produced a weekly fearure show on KCSM 91.1FM ("Have You Heard"), exploring the work of emerging and underrated jazz artists, and continues to dj for the station on occasion. A native of … more A masterful vocalist and “the superman of the Bay Area jazz scene” (SF Chronicle), Kenny Washington is easily among the most beloved and soulful singers working today. A native of New Orleans, Kenny grew up singing gospel music in church and playing saxophone in the school band. He continued his music studies at Xavier University where he became interested in various styles ranging from traditional and contemporary jazz, to classical, to rhythm-and-blues and pop. Joining the U.S. Navy Band in 1986, Kenny performed and toured nationally and internationally through out the U.S., Asia, Russia, and Australia. After nine years in the Navy, Kenny made his home in the San Francisco Bay Area where he established himself as a top vocalist. While performing with the Michael O’Neill Quintet at the Douglas Beach House, Kenny met vibraphonist Joe Locke who happened to be in the audience. This led to an invitation to perform with Joe at Dizzy’s; Jazz at Lincoln Center (JALC). Since then he has been a featured artist at JALC for over ten years where he has appeared with Joe Locke, Eric Reed, Eric Alexander, Joe Lavano, Branford Marsalis, Roberta Gambarini and Wynton Marsalis. With Wynton, Kenny has performed both in small groups and large including numerous times with the "Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra.” In 2013 Kenny was featured in Wynton’s oratorio: "Blood On The Fields" which also included vocalist Gregory Porter. Kenny has headlined performances in Japan, Russia, Scotland, Shanghai, Denmark, Mongolia and many other countries. He has performed at top Jazz Festival including the Monterey Jazz Festival, Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival and the San Jose Jazz Festival. Kenny is a jazz vocalist virtuoso. Emulating the classic styles of Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan and infusing colors of Stevie Wonder and Donny Hathaway, Kenny's free, playful approach, with over a four-octave range is awe inspiring. Oaklando is the brainchild of SF native Patrick Morehead, the composer and keyboardist who’s played with such talents as Karl Perazzo, Steve Turre, Jerry Gonzalez, and Benny Valarde. The traits we think we’ve spotted in the cowboy — bravery, boldness, a willingness to sacrifice the known for the sake of the better — have always been suspect. But the courage to leave behind a homeland and head west, to boldly step into a new place and declare it home, to survey the scene and try to find your place in it? That’s still around. “The idea of the American cowboy is this romanticized idea that’s just false,” Sunny Jain says plainly. “The immigrant is the current-day cowboy or cowgirl.” This dynamic — of interrogating American myths to make them fit the reality of our world, of both questioning and rhapsodizing the notion of identity in a contingent world — is at the heart of Wild Wild East , the new album from the Brooklyn-based bandleader, composer, dhol player, and drummer. His father, the late Smith Dobson IV, was a world renown Pianist and director of the Jazz series at the Garden City in San Jose for over twenty years, where he accompanied artists’ like Art Pepper, Stan Getz, Bobby Hutcherson, Harold Land, Chet Baker, Red Norvo, Tal Farlow, and Lee Konitz, to name a few.Also in the family, Grandfather Smith III is a Jazz Accordionist, Grandmother Norma, Mother Gail, and Sister Sasha are all Jazz Vocalists. The family often performed as a group at the Garden City, and other venues, as well as many local schools and workshops. For this special matinee, co-sponsored by the Smooth Jazz Cruise, Simpson and his finely wrought band will be joined by saxophonist and singer Grace Kelly . The Illinois-born Simpson was born into a musical family and cites the virtuosity of Oscar Peterson as one of his early guiding influences. Moving west after college, Simpson worked with guitarist Norman Brown and saxophonist Everette Harp before touring the world with Janet Jackson and getting the call from the iconic George Duke in 1990. Saxophonist Branford Marsalis is one of the most influential and revered figures in contemporary music. The NEA Jazz master, three-time Grammy Award winner, and Tony and EMMY Award nominee is equally at home performing concertos with symphony orchestras and sitting in with members of the Grateful Dead, but the core of his musical universe remains the Branford Marsalis Quartet. After more than three decades of existence with minimal personnel changes, this celebrated ensemble is revered for its uncompromising interpretation of a kaleidoscopic range of both original compositions and jazz and popular classics. While Ravi spent the first quarter century of his career focusing on acquiring a diverse array of experience as a sideman and then honing his own lustrous, harmonically ambiguous compositions, he’s taken up the family mantle in recent years. With a variety of ensembles, projects and initiatives on and off the bandstand, he’s championed the legacy of his parents (including with his 2025 stint as an SFJAZZ Resident Artistic Director). For this celebration he performs with trumpeter Jonathan Finlayson, a longtime collaborator who graduated from Berkeley High and spent years touring and recording with alto sax great and MBASE conceptualist Steve Coleman. A teenage prodigy, Israeli pianist/keyboardist Gadi Lehavi made his Village Vanguard debut with Ravi at 15. Now 30, he’s more than lived up to his enormous potential, playing with consummate technique and capacious imagination. Powering the quartet is Bay Area-reared drum sensation Elé Howell, 28, a supremely musical accompanist who gained national attention when Coltrane started hiring him in 2021 for various projects, including Cosmic Music: Revisiting the Music of John and Alice Coltrane. John Coltrane departed this mortal plane more than fifty years ago; today he remains among us, more alive than ever. His sound continues to grab the ears of an ever-widening circle of fans. His legend is stone solid: planted firmly in our culture as that of any 20th century musical giant. His saxophone sound—brooding, searching, dark—is still one of the most recognizable in modern jazz. His influence stretches over styles and genres, and transcends cultural boundaries. The modern ideal of music serving a deeply spiritual, connective purpose? A defining facet of John Coltrane. To Coltrane, a musician was a message-giver; making music was an endeavor tied to a larger, greater good. “I humbly asked to be given the means and privilege to make others happy through music,” Coltrane wrote in 1964 in a letter to his listeners, telling of a prayer to God. In 1966, less than a year before his death, he stated: “I know that there are bad forces, forces that bring suffering to others and misery to the world. I want to be the opposite force. I want to be the force which is truly for good.” Coltrane achieved his goal as a hard-working jazz player coming out of a proud, rooted musical tradition, paying his dues as a sideman, learning the ropes as a leader, working with primarily wordless music to convey his message. He released twenty-five albums as a leader during his lifetime, some attaining five-star, classic status: Blue Train, Giant Steps, My Favorite Things, his Grammy-nominated, “humble offering” to God, A Love Supreme. One after another, from 1957 to ’67, his music defined a comet-like path of rapid growth and dizzying rate of change. That Coltrane accomplished all he did in a mere ten years accounts at least partly for the saint-like devotion he often receives. He was instrumental to Miles Davis’s resurgence in the 1980s and helps us celebrate Miles’s centennial with music from Davis’s landmark 1982 live double album We Want Miles , along with classic Miles compositions spanning from the 1950s right up to his final era of Tutu in 1986 and Amandla in 1989 both of which Marcus Miller composed and produced. He will be joined by other members of Miles Davis’s 1980s comeback band guitarist Mike Stern , saxophonist Bill Evans and percussionist Mino Cinelu . A wildly prolific studio musician and bandleader, Miller and his distinctive bass virtuosity have been heard on well over 500 sessions for a dizzying array of major artists including Dizzy Gillespie, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, and McCoy Tyner to Paul Simon, Aretha Franklin, and Luther Vandross. Made up of percussionist Rohan Krishnamurthy , saxophonist Prasant Radhakrishnan , and keyboardist Colin Hogan , the trio was formed in 2017 to perform at an UnderCover Presents concert in Berkeley honoring the 50th Anniversary of the Beatles’ immortal Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band , and was the perfect outlet for longtime friends Krisnamurthy and Radhakrishnan to meld their love of jazz with their extensive South Indian classical training. A Kalamazoo, Michigan native, Krishnamurthy is one of the leading lights of Carnatic music in the U.S. and a master of the mridangam — a double-headed drum that is the primary rhythm accompaniment in Carnatic music and is played by Krishnamurthy in this project in conjunction with the Western drum set. Phoenix-born Radhakrishnan is known to SFJAZZ audiences through his dynamic Indo-Jazz trio VidyA and has been a major force in Bay Area jazz since 2005. Made up of percussionist Rohan Krishnamurthy , saxophonist Prasant Radhakrishnan , and keyboardist Colin Hogan , the trio was formed in 2017 to perform at an UnderCover Presents concert in Berkeley honoring the 50th Anniversary of the Beatles’ immortal Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band , and was the perfect outlet for longtime friends Krisnamurthy and Radhakrishnan to meld their love of jazz with their extensive South Indian classical training. A Kalamazoo, Michigan native, Krishnamurthy is one of the leading lights of Carnatic music in the U.S. and a master of the mridangam — a double-headed drum that is the primary rhythm accompaniment in Carnatic music and is played by Krishnamurthy in this project in conjunction with the Western drum set. Phoenix-born Radhakrishnan is known to SFJAZZ audiences through his dynamic Indo-Jazz trio VidyA and has been a major force in Bay Area jazz since 2005. A move to New York exposed her to a broad range of musical genres but she found herself increasingly drawn towards jazz. After moving to San Francisco in 2002, she began studying upright bass and quickly immersed herself into the San Francisco jazz scene, studying and performing with luminaries including Ray Drummond, Rodney Whitaker, Rufus Reid, the Marcus Shelby Jazz Orchestra, Andrew Speight, Vince Lateano, Mark Levine, Donald "Duck" Bailey, Allan Harris and Denise Perrier. Awarded every four yea… more 2027 American Piano Awards Finalist Brahm Sasner brings his jazz trio to the Sound Room where he'll be joined by Miles Turk on drums and Isaac Coyle on bass. Awarded every four years, the American Piano Awards identifies five emerging jazz artists and highlights their talent throughout a year long competition culminating in the Cole Porter Fellowship prize. Brahm is a 2026 graduate of the prestigious Manhattan School of Music where he developed his dynamic improvisational style through deep study of the jazz tradition. Raised in the Bay Area, Brahm was a member of SF Jazz bands the High School All Stars and the Monday Night Community Band. He has received awards from international, national, and statewide competitions including YoungArts and Rubato International. Brahm is also an alumnus of the Vail Jazz summer workshop. In addition to gigging throughout New York City, Brahm has toured extensively throughout the United States and abroad. She kicks off her residency with remarkable duo evening with Japanese tap dance master Kazunori Kumagai , revisiting their ongoing collaboration that goes back to their showstopping debut performance at the 2011 Tokyo Jazz Festival. Moving to New York at age 19 to immerse himself in tap culture, Kumagai is a veteran of Ted Levy and Savion Glover’s “Funk University” — the training ground for the landmark musical Bring in da Noise, Bring in da Funk — and studied with the late legend Gregory Hines. After moving back to Japan, Kumagai built on his affinity for jazz with the iconic Japanese trumpeter Terumasa Hino and opened his own studio in Japan in 2008. He was selected as one of the “100 Most Influential Japanese People” by Newsweek Japan and appeared as a solo performer at the Opening Ceremony of the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. He and Hiromi first toured Japan together in 2018.
