Join Grammy-winning musician Dom Flemons and his wife/creative collaborator Vania Kinard for a virtual exploration of Mexican and Chicano musical heritage. This session centers on the legendary "Father of Chicano Music," Lalo Guerrero , and the deep cultural music that defines the American Southwest. The event features an intimate conversation between Dom and Vania, offering a behind-the-scenes look at their archival research, their music collection, Dom’s Mexican-American ancestry, and his family’s music legacy that extends as far back as the late 1800s. Together, they will explore the significance of preserving these sounds and the stories they tell about Mexicans and Chicano identity. Dom reflects deeply on his personal connection to this history, tracing his Mexican-American roots back to his family’s longstanding presence in Phoenix. As a 6th generation Black Mexican from the Southwest, Dom has connected his family memories and his grandmother’s stories to Lalo Guerrero’s broader legacy.
