Known for his work with Braxton Cook and his brilliant string of releases as a leader, the rising pianist and composer Mathis Picard debuts at SFJAZZ with his trio. Born in France to Malagasy and French parents, Picard began playing piano at the age of three and quickly displayed extraordinary talent. By age ten, he had already been recognized as a “rising star” at the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival piano competition, a milestone that foreshadowed an international career. After studying at The Juilliard School under legendary pianist Kenny Barron, Picard developed a fearless artistic voice rooted in both jazz tradition and modern experimentation.
