more
Overview Conductor David Afkham and the San Francisco Symphony explore the musical orbit of Robert and Clara Schumann. Robert’s Fourth Symphony begins with a catchy rising-and-falling figure, the “Clara theme,” derived from one of his beloved bride’s own piano compositions. The theme appears throughout the symphony, which he presented to her on her 22nd birthday. Johannes Brahms’s Piano Concerto No. 1 is both an elegy for Robert and a tender portrait of Clara, whom Brahms once described as “going to the concert hall like a priestess to the altar.” You won’t want to miss the visionary soloist Garrick Ohlsson, who shares her disciplined devotion. Inspired by Ludwig van Beethoven, Unsuk Chin’s subito con forza pronounces itself forcefully and without reservation, painting with the bold brush strokes of the avant-garde.

more
Overview Oakland native and multi-Grammy Award-winning artist Fantastic Negrito joins the San Francisco Symphony for a striking collaboration that brings his bold, genre-defying sound into a symphonic setting. Drawing from blues, soul, rock, and deeply personal storytelling, his music balances grit and grace, joy and resilience. The performance also marks the 10-year anniversary of Fantastic Negrito’s breakout Tiny Desk Concerts appearance, the moment that introduced his voice to a global audience. Reimaged with a full orchestra, his songs expand in color and dimension, intimate yet powerful, grounded yet expansive. Join us for a shared celebration of artistic freedom, lived experience, and the transformative power of sound.

more
Overview A delectable double dose of Richard Strauss, administered by two of his greatest living interpreters, soprano Renée Fleming and debuting guest conductor Santtu-Matias Rouvali. In the late-life cycle Four Last Songs, Strauss bids a tender farewell to his life in music. Along the way, he pays tribute to Pauline, his diva-soprano spouse, as well as his horn-playing father—radiant French horn solos grace each of the songs. Ein Heldenleben, the irony-infused symphonic poem that Strauss wrote in his mid-30s, is an impassioned portrait of human successes and failures, told with a flair for the dramatic.

Overview Conductor Karina Canellakis leads a trio of thrilling works that demonstrate the world-building power of the modern orchestra. Victoria Borisova-Ollas’s 2003 tone poem The Kingdom of Silence evokes a vibrant realm of mystery and magic. Scottish violinist Nicola Benedetti brings her signature passion and precision to Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No. 2, a boldly cosmopolitan showpiece that boasts traditional Russian folk tunes as well as clickety-clackety castanets and other Spanish signifiers. Symphonic Dances, the ailing Rachmaninoff’s spectacular swan song, represents the composer’s late period at its opulent best. Rich in eccentric colors, it conjures up entire galaxies of expression.

Overview Dvořák wrote his Eighth Symphony at his summer home in southern Bohemia, where he hiked, listened to the birds, and felt the sun and wind on his skin. This music revels in the pleasures and mysteries of the natural world, the cycle of life that sustains us. Cellist Pablo Ferrández joins conductor Xian Zhang and the San Francisco Symphony for Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations, a poignant evocation of Mozartian order and beauty—a lost world Tchaikovsky longed to inhabit. Composed in 1933, Dances of Galánta rearranges and reinvents the Roma folk music that Kodály first heard in Galánta, the tiny railway town where he spent seven happy years as a child.

Overview Elim Chan conducts the Symphony in a stunning quartet of works that delve into the great unknown. In Nänie , Brahms memorializes a beloved friend with a poignant choral funeral song, transforming sorrowful resignation into humble gratitude. Renaud Capuçon regales us with the lustrous melodies, vibrant textures, and glittering pyrotechnics of Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto. Arvo Pärt’s shimmering a cappella Magnificat exemplifies the tintinnabuli style, which the composer invented and named after the bell-like resonance produced by a triad. John Adams’s Doctor Atomic Symphony, a condensed instrumental version of his 2005 opera, cloaks Nuclear Age anxiety in dark orchestral splendor.

Alexander Barantschik began his tenure as San Francisco Symphony Concertmaster in September 2001 and holds the Naoum Blinder Chair. Former concertmaster of the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra in Germany, London Symphony Orchestra, and Netherlands Radio Philharmonic, he has also been an active soloist and chamber musician throughout Europe. He has collaborated in chamber music with André Previn, Antonio Pappano, and Mstislav Rostropovich. As leader of the LSO, Mr. Barantschik toured Europe, Japan, and the United States; performed as soloist; and served as concertmaster for major symphonic cycles with Michael Tilson Thomas, Rostropovich, and Bernard Haitink. He was also concertmaster for Pierre Boulez’s year-long, three-continent seventy-fifth birthday celebration. Born in Russia, Mr. Barantschik attended the Saint Petersburg Conservatory and went on to perform with the major Russian orchestras, including the Saint Petersburg Philharmonic. His awards include first prize in the International Violin Competition in Sion, Switzerland, and in the Russian National Violin Competition. Since joining the San Francisco Symphony, Mr. Barantschik has led the Orchestra in several programs and appeared as soloist in concertos and other works by Bach, Mozart, Mendelssohn, Brahms, Beethoven, Prokofiev, Shostakovich, Walton, Piazzolla, and Schnittke, among others. Mr. Barantschik is a member of the faculty at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where he teaches graduate students from around the world in a special concertmaster program. Through an arrangement with the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, Mr. Barantschik has the exclusive use of the 1742 Guarnerius del Gesù violin once owned by the virtuoso Ferdinand David, who is believed to have played it in the world premiere of the Mendelssohn E-minor Violin Concerto in 1845. It was also the favorite instrument of the legendary Jascha Heifetz, who acquired it in 1922 and who bequeathed it to the Fine Arts Museums, with the stipulat

Overview Myths and legends are at the fore of a program headed by charismatic mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard and conductor Fabien Gabel. Ravel’s riveting, Russian-accented song cycle Shéhérazade abounds in sensuous modal melodies and dynamic drama that are sure to leave you as spellbound as Shéhérazade’s sultan. D’Indy’s vivid Istar , derived from Babylonian myth, celebrates the goddess of love and fertility, Istar, who strips herself naked to rescue her dead lover from hell. Based on a 19th-century German fairy tale about an empress who lacks both shadow and soul, Strauss’s surging single-movement Symphonic Fantasy on Die Frau ohne Schatten showcases what he called “the best parts” of his similarly titled opera.

Overview Prokofiev’s ballet music for Romeo and Juliet is every bit as singular as the Shakespeare tragedy that inspired it: Savage and sensual, tragic and comic, it conveys all the passion of the play and loses none of its ambiguity. Debuting French conductor Marie Jacquot leads the Orchestra in the first SF Symphony performances of Andromède, by her underrated fellow countrywoman Augusta Holmès. The symphonic poem infuses ancient Greek myth with Wagnerian grandeur. Inspired by the music of early Christianity, Ottorino Respighi pulls off medieval plainsong with 20th-century pizzazz in his spellbinding Concerto gregoriano . Japanese violinist Sayaka Shoji summons up all of its enormous expressive power.

Overview Choreographer Alonzo King and LINES Ballet’s regular collaborations with the San Francisco Symphony feel both like a homecoming and an evolution of a shared artistic language. In reimagining the expansive Americana of Copland’s Appalachian Spring and the evocative, impressionistic textures of Debussy’s Prelude to The Afternoon of a Faun , King and LINES Ballet invite us to explore how movement and sound breathe together in real time. Conductor James Gaffigan and SF Symphony Principal Cello Rainer Eudeikis expand the palette with Prokofiev’s sardonic and spectacular Sinfonia concertante. This cello concerto in all but name boasts one of the most demanding roles in the repertoire. The cello doles out every frequency in its range, from throbbing low notes to piercing cries. Overview Watch Jack Skellington plot to take over Christmas in the fantastical Disney tale Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas . This beloved stop motion cult hit comes to life like never before as the SF Symphony performs Danny Elfman’s delightfully quirky score live with the film on the big screen. Kids’ Tickets Half Off! Please note that we do not allow children under 3 at any performance, except for our Music for Families and Deck the Hall programs. Everyone entering Davies Symphony Hall, regardless of age, must have a ticket. Children under the age of 12 must be seated with an accompanying adult.
