In her debut, one-night performance at Black Cat, Bay Area vocalist Natanya Montgomery presents a tribute to Roberta Flack, one of the most influential voices in American soul, jazz, and R&B. Flack came up at a time when soul singing meant power and big vocal display. She went a different, more tender way, resulting in a legendary six decade career that produced countless hits, including "Killing Me Softly With His Song" and "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face," and shaped generations of artists after her.
Natanya is a new voice in the Bay Area scene, with a dynamic range that spans genre and a deep, deep love of the ballad. As a singer-songwriter, her interpretation and style is rooted in gospel tradition, honed by years of classical and opera training and deep study of the jazz greats who came before her. This project was born of a love for the b side, amazing songs that never charted and don't usually make it into a tribute set. It marks the start of a broader return to performance, with original music and future shows ahead.
The evening moves through Flack's best known songs as well as the lesser heard ones, and celebrates the artists she sang with and inspired, including Donny Hathaway, Luther Vandross, Peabo Bryson, and Stevie Wonder. Natanya will be joined by a four piece band featuring Bay Area star saxophonist Howard Wiley.
Whether Flack's music has been with you for years or you're hearing it for the first time, we'd love to have you there.

INSTANT ALTER blends a shapeshifting mix of styles to define one of the future sounds of jazz and beyond. Led by saxophonist Emilio Modeste and vocalist Natasha Agrama, their chordless quartet teams with rising stars Brandon Rose and Myles Martin to create an unprecedented musical adventure. With roots alongside icons from Stanley Clarke and Carlos Santana to Thundercat and Jon Batiste, INSTANT ALTER proves that progressive music can be both imaginative and healing, pushing the boundaries of artistic voices today.

Singer-songwriter Sami Stevens harnesses Jazz, Soul, Folk and Indie Rock influences to create truly intimate original music. Accompanying herself on piano or Wurlitzer, Sami delivers dynamic, personal performances deeply steeped in the lineage of the great American singer-songwriters of the 60’s and 70’s.
In 2023, Sami released her debut solo album ‘Morning’ on Sunnyside Records. Born from a love of classic American music and an ear for storytelling, ‘Morning’ showcases Stevens’ rich vocal delivery as it ebbs between intimate personal stories and stunning symphonic textures, treating the vastness of the human condition with painterly impressions and an empathetic disposition. Glide Magazine wrote “Sami Stevens did more than impress with her first solo outing, she quickly established herself as one of the most promising songwriters to appear in the past few years.”
Sami is also an avid collaborator; fresh off of a two year run with nine-time Grammy winner Norah Jones on auxiliary keys and background vocals as Norah toured her 2024 release ‘Visions.’ Other ongoing collaborations include Rose Thorne by Kenny Wollesen, I Insist by Kazemde George, The Way I Feel Inside by Marty Isenberg, Brave New World by Tredici Bacci, and a new one woman show by John Zorn and Jesse Harris, currently in development.

Amanda Addleman is a New York City–based, San Francisco–raised vocalist, pianist, composer, arranger, and educator.
For this special concert, she will present a collection of pieces that explore the fusion of her two worlds: firm Bay Area roots and a growing presence in New York City. She brings a rooted yet unmistakably modern voice to the jazz landscape, grounded in a sincere reverence for the great jazz traditions of the last century. Her interpretations of the canon are purposeful and exciting, imbued with nuance and a sense of discovery that keeps familiar standards feeling fresh and personal.
As a composer and arranger, she expands the music with original works and jazz-hued interpretations that draw seamlessly from contemporary folk, R&B, and pop. The result is a sound that feels both sophisticated and accessible, without ever losing its center. Addleman’s musical identity is cohesive, expressive, and forward-looking, honoring the past while confidently shaping her own place within it.
Addleman holds a Master’s degree from Manhattan School of Music and a Bachelor’s degree from Berklee College of Music. She is currently on faculty at Long Island University’s Roc Nation School of Music, as well as the Manhattan School of Music Precollege Division.
Her most recent release, Into the Light, is a collection of pieces that contrast the light and dark moments of her life and career. It has received praise from critics and musicians alike and is available on streaming services.

David Kikoski is a Grammy-nominated jazz pianist known for his virtuosic technique, versatility, and innovative approach. With over three decades of performing and recording, he has collaborated with jazz legends including Roy Haynes, the Brecker Brothers, Pat Metheny, Chris Potter, and the Charles Mingus Big Band, establishing himself as a sought-after presence on the global jazz scene. Blending bebop, post-bop, and contemporary jazz, Kikoski’s dynamic, spontaneous, and deeply swinging style continues to inspire audiences worldwide.
Dave and Smitty were contemporaries at Berklee College of Music in Boston in the early 1980s, and Ralph was already active on the Boston scene at the time, so Dave played with both Ralph and Smitty during those years.
Dave and Ralph later crossed paths again through Roy Haynes' band and recorded together in the late 1980s. Although their paths diverged for many years, they renewed their collaboration in 2025 with a month-long European tour, followed by a new recording project and performances in Northern California and British Columbia in early 2026. Dave and Smitty also reunited on vibraphonist John Locke's 1993 recording Wire Walker
When plans for the Black Cat residency came together, Dave reached out to Ralph, and the two of them invited Smitty to revisit those longstanding musical connections. Rob, from a younger generation and active on the Los Angeles scene, came highly recommended by Ralph.

David Kikoski, piano

Black Cat presents a rare convergence of two major voices in modern jazz, each shaped by the towering legacy of John Coltrane yet speaking in distinct musical languages of their own.
Grammy Award-winning saxophonist Wayne Escoffery brings a sound critics have called a "contemporary mix of Coltrane, Shorter and Henderson influences,” powerful, passionate, and unmistakably his own. A two-time Downbeat Critics Poll winner, Escoffery has spent decades at the center of the jazz world: a member of Tom Harrell's quintet for over a decade, a musical director of the Mingus Big Band, and leader of his own acclaimed quartet. His 2024 release Alone, featuring Gerald Clayton, Ron Carter, and Carl Allen, earned 5 stars in the London Times and was hailed as one of the year's finest jazz statements.
Sharing the stage is Miami-based pianist Tal Cohen, a Grammy-winning artist whose playing weaves folk melodies and classical influence into deeply personal, modern jazz harmony. Winner of the Barry Harris National Piano Competition and the Freedman Fellowship, Cohen has toured the globe alongside Terence Blanchard, Joe Lovano, and Greg Osby, earning praise for the "passion, focus and creativity" of his playing.
Together, Escoffery and Cohen trace two divergent paths from a shared source, a saxophonist whose sound channels Coltrane's fire, and a pianist whose harmonic palette reflects Coltrane's restless search for new musical languages.

Band Lineup:
Wayne Escoffery, Tenor Saxophone
Tal Cohen, Piano
Giulio Xavier Cetto, Bass
Malachi Whitson, Drums
