Recorded at two places that are totemic in The Charlatans’ history – Rockfield in Wales and their own Big Mushroom space in Middlewich, Cheshire – Burgess cites hauntology and psychogeography as two concepts that swirled in his head as the band dug into the album making. For one thing, their return to storied farm studio Rockfield for the first time in almost 30 years – since they made fifth album Tellin’ Stories – was an important step. As a band they hadn’t been there since keyboard player Rob Collins was killed, in the middle of that album’s sessions, in a car crash at the bottom of the track leading to the farm. Throughout the record you can hear The Charlatans’ awareness of the stuff that’s made them – the highs and the lows; the desire to honour their own mighty legacy, whilst not being defined by it. A career-long drive to be progressive and innovative.

Slow, drawn-out percussion and dramatic strings underscore Orville’s lush harmonizing and howling as he croons about (as he describes it) “descending back into darkness, even darker than ever before I went to rehab” before a discordant crash-out and crescendo. Rock bottom comes one night in downtown New York the summer of 2023 in the form of “The Fall,” chronicling the moment Orville knew—based on how his choices had begun to impact those closest to him—that a change needed to come, and quickly. “The lyrics are mostly about yearning for missing everything that I had lost in my life at that point: my relationship, my career, and my sanity,” he says. “But this song is also about finding the clarity that I needed to make a change, clarity that also involved healing some of the resentment I felt towards my ex and myself; this song is the turning point in the album that changes for the better.”

We last left him with the synthetic storytelling of his 2020 album Domesticated. Since then, Sébastien Tellier has been far from idle: he has worked on three film soundtracks, released two EPs, directed projects for some of his peers, and delivered one of the most memorable performances at the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games with his timeless La Ritournelle. Twenty years earlier, the release of this track on his second album Politics had already established Tellier as one of the most charismatic artists of the 21st century. A multi-talented multi-instrumentalist, he has explored a variety of musical landscapes spanning pop, folk(s), and electronic music. Sam Burton’s last album, Dear Departed , arose from a time of rebirth. In the last few years, Burton basically started over. There’s a freedom in leaving everything behind, and Burton embarked on a wandering phase. Along the way, he was writing songs. Following his 2020 debut I Can Go With You , Dear Departed was something of a reintroduction after a period of transition and transformation. He joined up with producer Jonathan Wilson to craft a more intricate, layered sound that recalled the lived-in yet immediate singer-songwriter albums of the ‘60s and ‘70s. Wilson helped Burton achieve a sound that didn’t descend into retro pastiche, but rather became an evocative echo, a dream of the past. The pair returned to making their breezy pop in 2013 with Volume 3 , an album of summer pop that arrived in the spring of that year. In late 2014, the duo announced the release of a second covers album. Classics featured works by legendary musicians such as Aretha Franklin, Dusty Springfield, Frank Sinatra, and Elvis Costello. They followed that with another Christmas album, Christmas Party , in 2016. Still focusing on the 20th century holiday tunes, it included guest performances by The Chapin Sisters, Jenny Lewis, and Steve Shelley of Sonic Youth. 2022 saw the release of the covers LP Melt Away: A Tribute to Brian Wilson , which features Wilson-penned classics like “ Wouldn’t It Be Nice ,” “ Do it Again ” and “ Darlin ,”. 2025 saw a boost in the band’s profile as Deschanel’s very first song written for Volume One , “ I Thought I Saw Your Face Today ” became a spontaneous viral hit, introducing their music to a new generation of music fans.

Their sound, which has attracted new fans by the thousands in the past few years, is a unique mélange of Sammy’s influences: classic rock, folk and funk and sprinkled with soul and jazz. Rae has been building toward this moment since moving to NYC from Connecticut in her early 20s. Finding herself without a built-in peer group, she simply built it herself: the literal and proverbial Friends. When she started playing shows, she made sure the audience was part of the family too. Everything that’s happened since – from EP’s “The Good Life” (2018) and “Let’s Throw a Party” (2021) to sold-out shows in major markets and secondary markets alike across North American and the UK & Europe, to high-profile festival sets around the world, including Bonnaroo’s main stage, Sound on Sound, All Things Go, and more – has been based on friends telling friends.

During a brief trip home to London, sitting in the same music room where his career began, he chose to explore his 5-string and 10-string signature Taylor acoustic guitars more fully than he ever had before. Through alternate tunings (“DAEAD”) and techniques, he trades scale for intimacy. The songs have titles like “Roses,” “Robin’s Egg,” “Dates and Dead People,” “Singing Saw.” “Run into the one you love forever / Laugh into each other’s empty mouth,” Beam sings on “Roses,” the album’s first track. At the end of Violins , “Fur Elise” closes the album by gesturing backwards toward a beautiful, simple classical piano song that Teitelbaum learned in her youth. Blondshell’s “Fur Elise” narrates the crosshairs of growing up and not knowing exactly how to, turning on a deliberately wonky central metaphor: walking down the aisle to “Fur Elise,” fully aware that no one would actually get married to it. The mismatch is the point. “You’re trying to figure out what you want your life to look like, and what you want playing at your wedding, but you don’t even know where to start,” Teitelbaum says. “You’re picking the wrong song.” Growth, self-possession, and the ongoing process of healing might seem to another person like “watching paint dry,” as she sings on Violins’ opener. But on “Fur Elise,” she puts forth a statement-of-self on her own terms: “Paint a wall with the things you want spoken out loud / And you get the choice to forget / And you render art / And the truth of it is separate” – a beguiling truth in itself, and a path forward.

Those themes remain at the heart of Hope Is A Heavy Thing, Oladokun’s new 12-track album, due September 25. Armisen stars in, writes, and produces IFC’s hit show Documentary Now . He has also appeared in HBO’s Our Flag Means Death , Judd Apatow’s The Bubble, and Amazon’s series Forever. He voices characters in Big Mouth and The Mitchells vs. The Machines . He is currently starring in the Broadway play All In. Armisen is an 11-season veteran of Saturday Night Live . From 2014-2024, Armisen was band leader of the 8G Band on Late Night With Seth Meyers .

Montell Fish is a musician and multidisciplinary creative force whose genre-agnostic sound and the world he’s built around it has garnered over 4.2 billion streams to-date and a devoted global audience. Across critically-acclaimed solo albums J AMIE and CHARLOTTE , as well as a collection of world-expanding side projects under mysterious monikers like dj gummy bear, Montell has proven himself to be one of alternative pop music’s most tantalizing and innovative voices, fusing R&B, indie and electronic influences to form a wholly unique sonic identity. Fennell’s latest offering, Nobody Lives Here , marks his clearest, crispest writing. Written, recorded, and produced by him and his longtime collaborator Brian Eichelberger, it is fueled by the keen understanding that life is a contradiction, a fleeting moment. But as we accept the presence of loss, we can still welcome others into our space with melody, lyrics, a slide guitar, or a cello’s hum. His sense of humanity is his musical compass. As an artist, Fennell takes license to both gut and be gutted. “ If the dark inspires the good, that’s a good thing to be honest about, ” he says.

PJ Morton is also the first Black composer to ever write an original song for a Disney attraction, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, now open at both Disney World and Disneyland. His latest solo album, Cape Town to Cairo , was fully created during a 30-day trip across Africa, and in his debut memoir, Saturday Night, Sunday Morning (Worthy Publishing / Hachette Book Group), Morton recounts and reflects upon a trailblazing path that continues to defy expectations and straddle the tensions of music and faith, race and culture, expression and identity. Recently, he has ventured further into the worlds of film and television – writing the closing song for Regina King’s Netflix film Shirley , producing music for Dr. Seuss’s Red Fish, Blue Fish on Netflix – as well as launching a new series of cross-genre collaborations, titled “A PJ Morton Production.” Championing stars across hip-hop, R&B and gospel (La Reezy, Darrel Walls and more), Morton is helming each project at his own Studio in the Country, the historic 26-acre complex in rural Bogalusa, Louisiana, where everyone from Stevie Wonder to Dr. John, The Neville Brothers, The Meters, Trent Reznor and Willie Nelson have made classic records, and now Morton is working to preserve.
