Rootstock Arts presents a captivating evening of cross-cultural musical dialogue with "Rubab Meets Sarod" on August 15th, 2026, from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM . Hosted at the intimate Rootstock Arts Center (5741 Telegraph Ave, Oakland, CA), this performance brings together the rich, soulful string traditions of Afghan and Indian classical music. The concert highlights the shared heritage and unique voices of two deeply expressive lutes: the Afghan Rubab and the Indian Sarod. As the music fluidly moves between the structured depth of Hindustani classical frameworks and the vibrant storytelling of traditional folk melodies, it invites listeners into a shared space of warmth, stillness, and emotional honesty. Siddique Ahmed (Rubab): A versatile multi-instrumentalist and music producer based in San Francisco, Siddique Ahmed (also known as Sohrab) is a founding member of Kabul Dreams, Afghanistan's first rock band. Over his lifelong musical journey, his path has led him back to his roots, where he focuses on preserving and celebrating the rich cultural heritage of Afghan classical and folk music. Through the soulful voice of the traditional Afghan Rubab, Siddique brings the diverse, timeless rhythms of different Afghan regions to life on the international stage. Souryadeep Bhattacharyya (Sarod): An internationally recognized, ICCR-empaneled artist based in the Bay Area, Souryadeep's musical lineage flows from the revered Rampur-Shahjahanpur and Maihar gharanas under the guidance of Pt. Alok Lahiri. His playing style combines deep technical mastery with a fluid, emotionally resonant expression that allows tradition to breathe in the present moment. Souryadeep has performed at prestigious venues worldwide, including the Lincoln Center and the Chicago Cultural Center, bringing a meditative and deeply human touch to the Sarod. Edrees Osman (Tabla) : A tabla player and cultural curator based in the San Francisco Bay Area, Edrees e is widely recognized for his dedication to preservin

Shankar with Amit Kavthekar & Selva Ganesh L. Shankar Additional Details L. Shankar , born in Madras, was exposed to Carnatic music and other styles from an early age. He started studying the vocals at the age of two then violin at five then mridangam at seven. At the age of seven, Shankar gave his first public concert, at a Ceylonese temple, Nallur Kandaswamy. In 1958, Shankar and his two older brothers, formed the Violin Trio along with Palghat Mani Iyer which made history in the 20th century Carnatic music scene. He gained a large following performing with some of the most eminent names in Carnatic music, playing all through India, and was highly sought after by legendary musicians such as Chembai Vaithyanatha Baghavatar, Palghat Mani Iyer, Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer, Alathur Srinivasa Iyer and many others. In 1973, John Mclaughlin and Shankar formed the band Turiyananda Sangeet and they co-wrote all the music for it. The band also included Ramnad Raghavan on the mridangam. Zakir Hussain was later added on tabla and the band name was changed to Shakti. Raghavan didn't stay with the project and T.H. Vikku Vinayakaram was added on ghatam for the remainder of those original Shakti days. The band toured extensively around the world. Shankar co-wrote all of the group's material with John McLaughlin, resulting in the release of three world music albums. According to Downbeat music magazine critic Lee Underwood, "All three are masterpieces, of which the deeply moving and technically astonishing Handful of Beauty will stand tall in recorded history for decades to come."
