DESCRIPTION:Ramekon O’Arwisters started Crochet Jam in 2012. His communit
 y art event is rooted in a cherished childhood memory that’s steeped in 
 the African American tradition of weaving in a calm and nonjudgmental envi
 ronment without rules or limitations. O’Arwisters’s presentation In Be
 tween is currently on view in the Koret Education Center at SFMOMA. He was
  an artist-in-residence at the de Young Museum\, the Djerassi Resident Art
 ists Program\, and the Vermont Studio Center. Grants and awards include Ar
 tadia\, the San Francisco Foundation\, the San Francisco Arts Commission C
 ultural Equity Program\, the Eureka Fellow awarded by the Fleishhacker Fou
 ndation\, and a Pollack-Krasner Foundation Grant. His work has been featur
 ed in the LA Times\, San Francisco Chronicle\, 7×7 Magazine\, Artnet\, Sa
 n Francisco Examiner\, and Brian Boucher’s Daily Dispatch . Founded in 1
 976 by Anne Marie Theilen and based in San Francisco’s Bayview neighborh
 ood\, SCRAP works at the intersection of the arts\, arts education\, and t
 he environment. SCRAP’s mission is to make the materials and methods of 
 art making accessible to everyone\, helping people transform everyday obje
 cts into creative projects that fuel the human spirit\, support community 
 vibrancy\, and reinforce environmental awareness. At the time of its found
 ing\, Theilen oversaw a program that placed professional artists in school
 s. Unfortunately\, there was no budget for materials\, so the artists stru
 ggled to find supplies. Meanwhile\, many local businesses were filling lan
 dfills with perfectly usable materials like paper with incorrect logos\, f
 abric samples\, industrial discards\, and product overruns. Recognizing an
  opportunity to solve two problems with one solution\, Theilen founded SCR
 AP in 1976. She teamed up with Ruth Asawa\, who became the organization’
 s first board president. Each year\, SCRAP’s programs serve over 33\,000
  people — all while diverting over 200 tons of waste from landfills.\n\n
