SUMMARY:Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 2
LOCATION:Davies Symphony Hall\, 201 Van Ness Ave\, San Francisco\, CA 94102
DESCRIPTION:Overview The acclaimed British pianist Benjamin Grosvenor perfo
rms Rachmaninoff’s Second Piano Concerto. Soundtrack scorers and pop mus
icians love to borrow its tunes\, so don’t be surprised if you find your
self humming along. The Austrian composer Alexander Zemlinsky began his Te
chnicolor orchestral fantasy Die Seejungfrau in 1902\, in the wake of a pa
inful breakup. The music might have been loosely inspired by Hans Christia
n Andersen’s The Little Mermaid \, but the subject is just an excuse for
the composer to express his own feelings of betrayal\, alienation\, and h
opeless longing. Opening this program conducted by Juraj Valčuha is a new
SF Symphony commission by Kyle Rivera\, winner of the Emerging Black Comp
 osers Project.\n\nhttps://www.sfsymphony.org/Buy-Tickets/2026-27/Rachmanin
