DESCRIPTION:Join Tlingit artists Lily Hope and Sydney Akagi for multiple ar
 tist activations throughout this Free Saturdays event. Hope and Akagi spec
 ialize in Ravenstail and Chilkat styles of weaving and were commissioned t
 o weave a special Chilkat dancing blanket for FAMSF. The activations inclu
 de a talk\, a family art-making activity\, and weaving demonstrations. The
  program concludes with a ceremony that activates their newly made Chikat 
 blanket through dance\, marking the beginning of its life at the de Young.

 lijah Marks\, Wilsey CourtAbout the artists Sydney Akagi (Tlingit) is a Ch
 ilkat and Ravenstail weaver working at the intersection of Indigenous know
 ledge systems\, contemporary form\, and environmental advocacy. Rooted in 
 Lingít Aaní (Southeast Alaska)\, Akagi’s work is informed by an ongoin
 g relationship to the Taku River and its salmon systems. Recent bodies of 
 work explore the presence of the human figure within Chilkat structure\, i
 ncorporating elements such as adornment\, tattoo\, and mark-making to cons
 ider identity\, transformation\, and the visibility of Indigenous bodies a
 cross time. Lily Hope (b. 1980) was born and raised in Juneau\, Alaska. Sh
 e is Tlingit\, of the Raven moiety\, of her grandmother’s clan\, the T
 ’akdeintaan. She learned Ravenstail weaving from her late mother\, Clari
 ssa Rizal\, and Kay Field Parker. She also apprenticed for over a decade i
 n Chilkat weaving with Rizal\, who was one of the last living apprentices 
 of the late master Chilkat weaver Jennie Thlunaut. She’s committed to co
 -creating\, and teaching the technical and spiritual practices in these tw
