Musical opening credits introduce the four grown Kong sisters: Hilda, Helen, Hedy, and Hazel. They live under one roof with their widower father. Hedy, the titular tomboy (a fencing instructor, preternaturally good at tennis), plays matchmaker for the workhorse of the family, the eldest, Hilda. The statuesque, seductive Helen keeps getting in the way. The youngest, Hazel, elopes.
